Will this helmet fit me?

To determine if a helmet will fit well, it's important to know what you'll be wearing underneath. For historical helmets purchased from us, you should consider the extra thickness of any undergarments.

Measure your own head circumference (just above the eyebrows) and use the guidelines below to calculate the correct size:

  • Helmet only: Are you wearing the helmet directly on your head (or does the helmet already have thick built-in padding)? Then you can use your tightly measured head circumference.

  • With a padded coif: Are you wearing a padded coif under your helmet? Then add 3.5 cm to your measured head circumference.

  • With a chainmail coif: Are you wearing a chainmail coif (without a padded coif underneath) under your helmet? Then add 2.5 cm to your measured head circumference.

  • With both a padded and chainmail coif: Are you wearing both a fabric padded coif and a chainmail coif under your helmet? Then add 6 cm to your measured head circumference.

An example:

You measure your own head circumference and it is 58 cm. You want to wear the helmet with both a padded coif and a chainmail coif. So you add 6 cm to this. The minimum internal circumference the helmet must have to fit you is then 64 cm.

Our tip

The size charts in the product descriptions of Celtic WebMerchant indicate the maximum internal circumference of the helmet. Are you exactly on the border after the calculation or in doubt? Always choose a size larger. A helmet that is slightly too roomy can be easily adjusted with extra padding (such as loose foam or felt pads), but a helmet that is too small cannot be comfortably worn on your head.
