Why are the shipping costs at Celtic WebMerchant higher because I live on an island?

For shipments to islands, carriers often charge an additional surcharge on top of the standard rate. This is due to the following reasons:

• Extra logistics: Transport to an island often requires additional steps, such as using a ferry or an airplane.
• Carrier surcharge: These extra costs are directly passed on to us by the shipping services (such as UPS or DPD) as an 'island surcharge'.
