My product is completely covered in grease?

It is completely understandable to be startled when you unpack a new product and find it covered in a thick layer of grease. However, this is actually a sign of good care for the material.

Below we explain why this grease is essential and how to handle it:

The grease is not a defect, but protection

On the contrary, the grease actually ensures a longer lifespan for your product. It does not make the product dirty; it is a necessary protective layer. Steel products often travel a long way from the manufacturer and then wait in our warehouse for months or even years before being sold. This thick grease, also known as transport grease, ensures that the steel remains in top condition during this period and does not rust due to humidity.

Products such as swords, armor, and chainmail are therefore almost always delivered to you well-greased.

How to handle the grease?

  • Leave it on: We generally recommend leaving the grease on as long as you do not use or display the product directly.
  • Remove: Do you still want to remove the grease? Then use a dry, lint-free cloth or a piece of kitchen paper with a small amount of degreaser (such as white spirit or a mild cleaner). Gently clean the steel until the thick layer is gone.
  • Maintenance after use: Once you have removed the transport grease or touched the product, the steel is vulnerable. Grease the product again immediately after each use or cleaning with an anti-rust spray such as Ballistol or an acid-free oil.

Your responsibility and warranty

You are responsible for keeping steel products well-greased. Steel can quickly rust due to:

  • Humidity: Storing items in a damp shed or basement.
  • Fingerprints: The acid in your skin affects the steel; if you touch the steel with bare hands, clean it immediately afterward and grease it again.
  • Wet conditions: Use during rain or in a humid environment without immediate maintenance afterward.

Because rust is a direct result of environmental factors and maintenance, we do not cover damages from superficial rust. Preventing rust is part of the regular maintenance of historical replicas.

Exception: you open your package and discover that the product is full of deep rust. In that case, not enough transport grease was used to preserve the product for a long time. This is considered damage.
