Is my product classified as a weapon by customs?

This strongly depends on the specific product you have ordered and the legislation in your country. Customs assess each package based on international guidelines and local regulations.

How does customs classify our products?

Customs determine the category of a product using the so-called HS code (tariff code).

  • HS code 93070000: For swords, daggers, bayonets, lances, and similar weapons, as well as their parts and scabbards, we standardly use the international code 93070000. For HEMA weapons, we also use the tariff code 9506919000
  • Meaning: This code informs customs worldwide that it concerns bladed weapons (non-firearms). Although this is an official category, customs in your country will then determine whether this specific object is allowed for import.

What are the consequences of this classification?

  1. Inspection: Because the code indicates that it is a sword or similar object, customs may decide to open the package for a manual check. This is a standard procedure that can extend the delivery time by an average of two weeks.
  2. Import duties: The code 93070000 determines which tax rate is calculated over the product. This rate varies per country.
  3. Admissibility: Customs check whether the object complies with local weapons law. A blunt re-enactment sword is sometimes assessed differently than a razor-sharp one, but both fall under the same tariff code.

A LARP sword is not classified as a weapon because we do not declare it as 93070000.

Note:

Although we use the correct codes, you remain responsible for whether a product with this classification can be imported into your country. Always check the local weapons law before ordering if in doubt.
